BARBARA LOKEN

Title: Chairwoman of the Marketing Department, University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management; marketing professor and adjunct professor in the U's Psychology Department.

Education: Ph.D., social psychology, University of Illinois, 1981; Master of Arts, psychology, New York University, 1976; Bachelor of Arts, psychology, University of Minnesota, 1973.

Early work: As a doctoral student, worked as a researcher on the Minnesota Heart Health Program, a 13-year research project begun in the 1980s to try to reduce deaths from cardiovascular disease. Loken's work focused mostly on tobacco use and whether simple marketing techniques could do a better job of getting people to change behavior rather than the more traditional health-education approach.
