Justin Bieber's famous hair flew when he danced Star Tribune photo by Renee Jones Schneider On the fifth show of his first world tour, Justin Bieber proved to be a charming entertainer, with good moves, great energy and a gift of gab (he mentioned his trip to Mall of America). As I stated in my review, he offered a pretty cool production for a solo teen idol. (The last male idol of this ilk must have been Aaron Carter in the early '00s.) As for Justin's singing, well, let's just say that's not his strong suit. He's improving but don't look for any Grammys for best male vocalist. Props for him including opening acts Sean Kingston and Jessica Jarrell as duet partners in his set. He also gave his backup quartet, Legaci, whom he discovered on YouTube, a nice slot in the middle of his set; they did a cappella renditions of such recent hits as "Billionaire" and "Down." Justin, 16, also showed old movies/videos of him performing. The oddest clip, though, was encouraging his fans not to text while driving. Um, dude, how many of your fans do you think are old enough to drive? Predictably, the souvenir stands did brisk business (maybe more than $20 per concertgoer). Hot sellers were glowsticks, blinking rings, colored rubber bracelets, a charm bracelet and posters (which sold out). With his tour stretching into December, Justin even had scarves and hoodies for sale. While there was roping to control the lines at the souvenir stands, too bad Target Center wasn't as efficient in some other areas. Does the air conditioning only work properly when there are 4,000 Lynx fans in the arena? Since it was so warm in the arena packed with more than 15,000 bouncing bodies, I went to buy a bottle of water; but, nope, the concessionaires (who had just sold some popcorn to a woman) said they were out of water (though some were clearly visible in the glass-door refrigerators). They were busy counting cash, not serving customers, it turned out, even though Bieber would be onstage for another half hour. (Same thing happened when I tried to buy a water at the arena's upper-level bar.) Here is what Justin Bieber played: Love Me/ Bigger/ U Smile/ Runaway Love/ Never Let You Go/ Favorite Girl/ One Less Lonely Girl/ Somebody to Love/ Overboard with Jessica Jarrell/ Never Say Never/ medley by Legaci, Justin's backup singers/ Up/ One Time/ That Should Be Me/ Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' (Michael Jackson)/ Walk This Way (Aerosmith)/ Eenie Meenie with Sean Kingston/ Down to Earth ENCORE With You (Chris Brown) / Baby
