Bicyclist hit near Lake Calhoun was riding in proper location, police say

The bicyclist who was hit and seriously injured over the weekend near Lake Calhoun was riding in the proper spot along the road, authorities said Monday.

Also on Monday, police identified the victim as Elisabeth A. Melander, 31, of St. Paul.

Melander was struck midafternoon Saturday while riding east on Excelsior Boulevard near the Minikahda Club.

Melander was listed in satisfactory condition Monday afternoon at Hennepin County Medical Center.

That was an improvement from critical condition soon after the crash.

Melander was riding "on the right side of the right lane" at the time the car hit her from behind, said police spokesman John Elder, who added that her position was correct for that stretch of road.

The driver immediately stopped and cooperated with police, Elder said. Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, he said.

Saturday's collision occurred on the same stretch of eastbound Excelsior where a hit-and-run driver killed 65-year-old Jimmy Nisser as he rode his bicycle before dawn in September 2008. The motorist who fled has not been located.
