You can't paddle a canoe to get to one of the most visited spots in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Instead, you'll have to grab sturdy shoes or hiking boots to tramp to the top of Eagle Mountain — at 2,301 feet, the highest point in Minnesota. It's a 7-mile round-trip hike, with about 600 feet of elevation. No, it's not as spectacular as summiting Mount Rainier or one of Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks, but it's also a heck of a lot easier. And the vistas of Minnesota's North Woods wilderness is worth the effort. Pack a lunch (no cans or bottles, remember, this is the BWCA) and bring your camera. Get a self-issuing BWCA permit at the trailhead, off Forest Road 170 about 16 miles northwest of Grand Marais. For more information: Gunflint Ranger District, 1-218-387-1750.
