A slightly edited Bemidji State news release:

Is this The Year of the Beaver in men's hockey?

Maybe. Bemidji State beat No. 1 Miami 3-2 on Friday, but a little of the lustre of that upset was tarnished when the Beavers lost to Ohio State 2-1 in OT the next day in the Subway Holiday Classic at the Ralph in Grand Forks, N.D.

The win versus the nation's top-ranked RedHawks marked the first time BSU
has knocked off the top team in NCAA Division I's hockey.

With the score knotted at 2-2 late in the third period, senior captain Chris
McKelvie, who played at Irondale, followed Matt Read into the zone as a trailer, collected a rebound from the leg of
Miami goaltender Cody Reichard and scored with 3:19 left.

The Beavers' victory was their 11th victory of the season.

"There aren't many guys in college hockey faster than Chris
McKelvie," BSU head coach Tom Serratore said.
"Chris sensed it, he saw it and he went. When you beat people to
pucks, good things happen."

"All week we've been talking that this is the No. 1 team in the
nation and we had to have our best game to show the nation that we are
for real," Read said. "It took 60 minutes but we had some payback
to deal with tonight."

The RedHawks beat BSU in the semifinals of the Frozen Four last season.

The first period panned out just as you would imagine of a game between
the nation's top two defenses. A grand total of nine shots made it to
the goaltenders. Despite being outshot 7-2, the Beavers held a 1-0.

Darcy Findlay struck at 8:37. He muscled a shot
on goal despite being partially blocked. The puck bounced up and over
the right shoulder of Reichard. Findlay's second goal of the season
was assisted by freshman Aaron McLeod.

Bemidji State went up 2-0 at 6:02 of the second. Tyler Lehrke corralled a rebound off McKelvie's shot and buried
his third goal of the season.

The Beavers spent the much of the remainder of the period pinned deep
within their defensive zone. The RedHawks piled up a 10-6 advantage on
the shot board, but came up empty as Dan Bakala slammed the door on the Miami barrage to preserve the two-goal
lead.

The RedHawks battled back to score the game's first power-play marker
taking advantage of a Dan MacIntyre
interference call at the 14:13 mark. MU capitalized on the man
advantage one minute, 11 seconds later getting a Carter Camper goal
from the point.

Just under three minutes later, MU got a second goal from Camper to
knot the game at 2-2.

But with 3:19 to play, McKelvie was in the right place at the right
time, netting his fifth goal of the season on the rebound. Read was
credited with an assist on the play after skating the puck into the zone
and firing a backhand on net.

Bakala finished the night with 20 saves, including 10 in the second
period alone to post his eighth victory of the season.

Reichard turned away 12 BSU shots in 58:43 between the pipes for the
RedHawks, but was tagged with the loss, his first of the season (8-1-2).

LOSS TO BUCKEYES

For the 19th time in 14 games, BSU was first to score, but Saturday night was different than any of the previous nine
occasions. The Beavers lost.

Ohio State battled back to tie the game in the second period and got an
even-strength goal from Kyle Read, 48 seconds into overtime just seconds
after a Buckeye power-play had expired to hand the Beavers their second
loss of the season.

Bemidji State's fourth line had the team's one goal. Aaron McLeod netted his third goal of
the season and second point of the of the weekend beating the
Buckeyes' Cal Heeter at the 17:29 mark of the first period. He was
assisted on the play by Darcy Findlay and Ryan
Adams.

Trailing 1-0 after the first period, OSU evened the score, 1-1, with
just 2:21 left in the second period. Ian Boots accounted for the goal,
his first of the season, with help from Devon Krogh and Sean Duddy.

A scoreless third period in which each team put eight shots on net,
sent the Beavers to an extra frame for the fourth time this season.

Playing the first 45 seconds of overtime on the power-play, OSU
peppered Dugas with three shots in 48 seconds. The last, off the stick
of the Buckeyes' Read, found the back of the net.

Freshman Mathieu Dugas, in his fourth start as a
Beaver, played 60:48 between the pipes recording 20 saves and allowing
two goals. His record is now 3-1-0.
