Lead-up

All eyes — and bets — were on Justify, who went off on the rail as a heavy favorite, 3-5.

The break

Justify started clean and took the lead from the first turn, pressured by Restoring Hope, Bravazo and Noble Indy at the midway far turn.

The finish

Gronkowski stormed from last in the pack and provided a challenge along with Hofburg. But Justify never wobbled and completed a wire-to-wire triumph, with former Canterbury Downs jockey Mike Smith along for the ride.

• Bob Baffert is the second trainer to win two triple crowns (Jim Fitzsimmons, 1930, '35).

• Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots tight end, was on hand to celebrate his namesake's run.

• Attendance was capped at 90,000.

• Former Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, now head coach of the Giants, gave the "Riders up" call before the race.
