Nope, no Train or Matchbox 20 at the Basilica Block Party this year.

Organizers of the 22nd annual Basilica of St. Mary church bash forsook the usual suspects and put together their freshest lineup in years with a trio of longtime hipster favorites, Death Cab for Cutie, Ryan Adams and Cold War Kids; a couple of hot new mainstream rock acts, American Authors and X-Ambassadors; and a pair of diverse buzz makers, Gary Clark Jr. and Andra Day.

Seattle-bred dorm-room rock brooders Death Cab will headline the main stage on Friday, July 8, performing opposite the acclaimed Texas blues revivalist Clark and Californian R&B/soul crooner Day on the smaller church-side stage. That night's lineup also includes Cold War Kids, American Authors, X-Ambassadors and one of this year's two Cities 97-favored "Matt" songwriters, Matt Hires.

Denver's "How to Save a Life"-hitmaking rock balladeers the Fray will top out the Saturday, July 9, schedule across from alt-country hero Adams. The rest of Night 2's schedule includes "American Idol" 2012 winner Phillip Phillips, Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn, German hippie-folk-pop duo Milky Chance and the other Matt entrant, Matt Nathanson.

Clark, Day and Adams are likely to be the biggest attention grabbers of the fest. Clark has only played two headlining shows in town since he shot to fame off Eric Clapton's Crossroads festivals in the late '00s, and both shows were quick sell-outs at First Avenue that drew rapturous responses (including one just a couple weeks ago).

Day has yet to play a big gig in town but has been earning Adele and Amy Winehouse comparisons in recent months like Donald Trump earning hate mail. See the video below for proof of the wow factor around her.

As for Adams … well, let's all say a Hail Mary. The acclaimed, prolific but erratic songwriter has turned in as many triumphant Twin Cities concerts in two decades as he has total disasters. Plus, he has a tendency to fly off at the mouth, which could have blasphemous results on church grounds (see also: Father John Misty). However, Adams has been turning in remarkably even-keel and stellar performances over the past year with a new straight-ahead backing band called the Shining.

Each night of the Basilica party will include a third stage sponsored by the Star Tribune featuring all local bands, including Gospel Machine, Fort Wilson Riot and the Step Rockets on July 8 and Farewell Milwaukee, Holidae and Eric Mayson on July 9.

Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. for $55 per night or $100 for both nights via eTix.com or 1-800-514-3849. Discounted pre-sale tickets will be offered to Cities 97 club members and past purchasers starting Friday at 10 a.m.

The Basilica Block Party was launched in 1995 to help fund a $9.5 million facelift to the historic Basilica of Saint Mary in downtown Minneapolis, and it continues to fund the building's upkeep. Proceeds (5 percent) also go to St. Vincent de Paul charity programs.
