A barn in southern Minnesota caught fire after dark, and the blaze killed dozens of goats inside, authorities said Tuesday.

The Freeborn County Sheriff's Office was alerted about 8:40 p.m. to the fire on property about 10 miles east of Albert Lea in Hayward.

Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting from the roof and both ends of the barn, the Sheriff's Office said.

About 50 goats were inside, and none survived. The barn was a total loss.

The value of the goats was put at roughly $20,000, according to the Sheriff's Office.

A livestock trailer loaded with hay and about 80 bales of hay were in the barn and also lost in the fire.

Authorities have yet to give a preliminary indication of how the fire started.
