Last year I switched from a queen to a king-sized bed, which meant buying new sheets. My favorite set of sheets (yes, I had a favorite) were a bamboo/cotton blend from Target.

Target, and almost every other retailer, have quit selling bamboo sheets and towels. Why? Maybe it's changing consumer tastes or the fact that bamboo isn't considered as eco-friendly as once thought. Whatever the reason, bamboo is nearly impossible to find anywhere except online.

But sheets made from bamboo are perfect for warm weather. They sleep cool with a soft, silky feel, They also feel warm in the winter, I'm told, but I can't vouch for that--I switch to flannel by December.

Recently, I went to several Tuesday Morning locations to find 100 percent bamboo sheets--the only place in the TWin Cities where I could find them. Most locations were out of stock, but the salespeople kept saying how their customers love the bamboo sheets in the summer.

After having them for several weeks, I am a convert with some caveats. I think I liked Target's 70 percent bamboo and 30 percent cotton sheet a little better. The set I purchased from Tuesday Morning is the only sheet I've ever purchased that is too generously sized. The fitted sheet doesn't fit snugly on my pillowtop, but I still love the feel.

Another advantage of bamboo is drying quickly in the dryer, but not my new set. They actually dry slowly. And they're heavy. But if you dry them until they're almost completely dry, the wrinkles disappear easily. If you pull them out damp, the wrinkles don't go away.

I paid about $80 at Tuesday Morning for a king set. If you want a cool, soft sheet in the summer, try bamboo rayon. After Tuesday Morning, try online stores such as Sleepbamboo or Organic Bamboo , Wal-Mart or Organic Bamboo Sheets, but for inexpensive prices and low shipping costs ($3), try Overstock. Just look for "bamboo sheets" in the search field.

I can't say that all bamboo sheets will be wonderful, but I think they're a safer bet than bamboo towels, which are hit and miss.

Any other bamboo sheet fans? Detractors? This is one of the few products where I bought it originally because it was green. AFter discovered it's not so green, I still want it after finding out that it's not very green after all. Buying organic bamboo helps a bit, but it's still being trucked from China. But come to think of it, aren't most sheets made in China or India anyway?
