Atlanta to start Sean Newcomb over Kevin Gausman in Game 3

October 7, 2018 at 12:52AM

Atlanta Braves lefthander Sean Newcomb will start Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday night and not Kevin Gausman.

With the host Braves down 2-0 in the best-of-five series, manager Brian Snitker made the announcement Saturday, a day after saying Gausman would pitch.

Newcomb pitched two scoreless innings in Thursday's Game 1 in Los Angeles. Gausman has not pitched in the series.

"You know, the situation is kind of dire right now," Snitker said. "We need to win. And not that Gausman doesn't give us that opportunity. We like how Newcomb matches up with them and the success that he's had against the Dodgers this year."

Against the Dodgers on July 29 in Atlanta, Newcomb lost a no-hit bid with two outs in the ninth inning when on a 2-2 count, Chris Taylor hit a single to left field past diving third baseman Johan Camargo.

Red Sox lose Wright

Boston knuckleballer Steven Wright was replaced on the American League Division Series roster with reliever Heath Hembree.

Wright has inflammation in his left knee and a loose body. He is ineligible for the rest of the best-of-five series against the New York Yankees and also cannot play in the AL Championship Series.

Hembree was 4-1 with a 4.20 ERA in 67 games.
