THE Traveler: Julie Hessler of West St. Paul.

The scene: An American redstart seemed happy to have landed at Tettegouche State Park, along Minnesota's North Shore.

The Trip: Hessler and her husband, Todd Nielsen, spent a long weekend in May at Lutsen Resort. They had just hiked to the falls on the Baptism River trail in Tettegouche when they encountered this bird.

How I got this shot: Hessler shot with a Panasonic Lumix FZ150 camera. "I was lucky!" Hessler responded when asked how she managed to make this photo. "The weekend we were there, the woods were filled with American redstarts, chestnut-sided warblers and black-throated green warblers. We had stopped along the river because the bird songs were intense, and I spotted the redstart singing in the tree. I quickly zoomed in … and was lucky to catch him in midsong. He was the perfect motif for our weekend."

On State Parks: The couple love Tettegouche, which offers trails with spectacular views of Lake Superior and waterfalls and good bird-watching along the Baptism River, she wrote. "As much as I love the North Shore," she added, "my favorite Minnesota state park is Beaver Creek Valley State Park in southeastern Minnesota for its birds and solitude."
