This season's "Straight from the Heart" coffee concert series at the Lakeville Area Arts Center ends Sunday, May 18 with a collaboration between the Vecchione/Erdahl Bass Oboe Duo and soprano Maria Jette and her husband, pianist Lee Blaske. The show is at 2 p.m.
Jette and Blaske will be performing songs of Thelonious Monk and Franz Schubert, contrasted by Erdahl and Vecchione's English horn/bass duo versions of the same songs, arranged and composed by Timothy Goplerud. The recital also includes a salute to the music of Edvard Grieg in celebration of Norwegian Constitution Day, Syttende Mai.
Tickets are $15 general admission and $12 students and seniors. The price includes coffee and refreshments. Tickets are available at www.lakevilleareaartscenter.com, or at the Arts Center, 20965 Holyoke Av. For more information, call 952-985-4640.
Shakespeare play with a new twist
Shakespeare's romantic comedy "Twelfth Night" will get a new spin as two local theater companies present the play in the Japanese Kabuki form, with the same stylized movement, vocal techniques, scenery and costumes.
In the play, the kingdom of Illyria is thrown topsy-turvy as everyone from the regal Duke and haughty Countess to their most lowly servants seeks to make a love match — and the attempts rarely work out as intended. The Chameleon Theatre Circle and Green T Productions will produce the play, calling the match between Kabuki and the source material "an unexpected but surprisingly perfect alignment of theatrical styles from different cultures and parts of the world."
Performances are May 30-June 1, June 5-9 and June 12-14 in the Black Box Theatre in the Ames Center (formerly the Burnsville Performing Arts Center), 12600 Nicollet Av., Burnsville. Tickets are $20 for adults and $17 for students, seniors and Fringe Button holders. Group rates also are available. Tickets are available at the Ames Center box office and through Ticketmaster online or at 1-800-982-2787.
