Friday: Torey Bonar

Not every artist can say they got their start doing the cover art for a nationally acclaimed album, but having Haley Bonar as your sister doesn't hurt. Torey Bonar got her first exposure with the artwork for her big sister's 2008 CD "Big Star," but with her first solo exhibition at clothing boutique Cliché, she's ready to hold her own. Torey's abstract paintings in this show incorporate her signature use of vertical and horizontal lines that messily yet purposefully intersect to layered, collagelike effect within a saturated color palette. The opening reception will include music from DJ Real Talk Radio and 10 percent off all clothing and accessories.

Ongoing: 'Art & Object'

Marie Antoinette would have appreciated the pretty, pale-yellow Sui dynasty ceramic horse and elegant gold-leafed folding screen standing beside a huge photo of her luxuriously embroidered bed in Weinstein Gallery's current show. To stave off winter doldrums and defy the gods of recession, gallery owner Martin Weinstein has orchestrated a little "Versailles salon" in a new section of his south Minneapolis gallery. The objects -- including an empire-style settee, a Han dynasty pottery figure and a Mexican architectural fragment on a 19th-century French pedestal -- are an unusual venture for a gallery specializing in photography. Besides a suite of Robert Polidori's photos of Versailles interiors, "Art and Object" includes romanticized portraits by Guatemalan photographer Luis Gonzalez-Palma paired with a monumental tulipwood bowl by Edward Moulthorp, architectural photos by Lynn Davis, tree pictures by Doug and Mike Starn, African masks and more. It's a diverting outing, and a temptation for serious collectors.
