Medium of Exchange: The Art of Cash

No one ever seems to have enough. Money, that is. Now 10 artists are going to run out some new ideas about the stuff and its impact on our lives. In prints, photos, paintings, drawings, installations and sculpture, the show promises to address everything from the national debt to "power, beauty, personal freedom, the commonwealth, inequity and the simple iconography of money." Expect everything from Rob McBroom's logo-enhanced faux currency to Alexa Horochowski's gold-leafed mattress for the homeless -- or her "homeless mattress," which is not quite the same thing. Additional participants are John Ilg, Eric Lunde, Caitlin Karolczak, David Bartley, Rachel Breen, Pete Dreissen, Karen Searle and Beth Parkhill. -Mary Abbe

Ad Hoc Art grand opening

The term "ad hoc" refers to a makeshift, improvised solution. Accordingly, this weekend's grand opening of the Ad Hoc Art pop-up gallery in downtown Minneapolis hopes to offer a temporary fix to the challenge of connecting local artists and patrons. The gallery will host shows every two weeks this summer, with more than 150 artists (to be announced) participating over the run. In addition to artist submissions, the 5,500-square-foot gallery will have an interactive aspect, allowing visitors to contribute a few brush strokes to a collective canvas. Best of all, all proceeds go directly back to the artists. -Jahna Peloquin

'Rembrandt in America'

The Minneapolis Institute of Art's latest exhibition promises to be the largest gathering of the master's portraits on loan from U.S. museums and private collections. It will feature 24 paintings by the 17th-century Dutch master plus more than 20 other pictures by his contemporaries that were once thought to be by him. The show was initiated by the North Carolina Museum of Art, which added the MIA as a partner after director Kaywin Feldman called and offered to lend "Lucretia," one of Rembrandt's most famous and tender paintings. Minneapolis curator Tom Rassieur also put together a second exhibit of Rembrandt drawings and etchings to flesh out the artist's caree. -Mary Abbe
