'Isohyet; Isopleth' and 'Seven Billion'

The artist's process is the thematic thread tying together two exhibits opening at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts' MAEP (Minneapolis Artists Exhibition Program) Galleries. Named after meteorological lines drawn on a map, "Isohyet; Isopleth" is the second collaborative installation by Minneapolis multimedia artists Katelyn Farstad and David Frohlich. Through various paintings, prints, sculptures and even animated gifs, the artists allude to what happens when different work styles merge. Meanwhile, St. Paul artist Gregory Fitz's installation, "Seven Billion," is meant to reveal his decision-making process as an artist whose chief materials -- insulation foam and chipboard -- are intentionally insulting to high art. The three-part installation, which includes Day-Glo gestural landscapes, paintings inspired by Ansel Adams photographs, and cinder-block table sculptures, is meant to challenge the emphasis placed on craft and presentation in the art world.

'Second Hand Emotion'

Earlier this year, Twin Cities art expatriate Isaac Arvold lost three years' worth of work when his bag was stolen in Brooklyn. Fortunately, he had documented most of that work -- illustrations in two sketchbooks compiled while on tour with Atmosphere -- through photos and scans. They provided the taking-off point for a new hometown exhibition. The Kickstarter-funded show will feature 48 original mixed-media paintings presented together as large murals, reflecting the artist's memories being rebuilt, piece by piece. Additional large-scale paintings and illustrations will be featured, as well as select collaborations.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
