Two Prospective Retrospectives

Reception Saturday: For more than 40 years, artist/performer Lynn Gray and sculptor Wayne Potratz have trained and inspired art students at the University of Minnesota. Their long careers are recapped in this joint retirement retrospective. Gray's colorful abstract paintings, multimedia constructions and word-infused stencil drawings have an urban edge but derive, he says, from solitary musings at a remote mountain studio in Guerrero, Mexico. As seen here, Potratz's cast metal sculptures are inspired by his solitary wilderness canoe trips and often allude to the accouterments of those voyages — paddles, canoes — and to the woodsy environments through which he passes. (Reception 6-8 p.m. Sat. Free. Regis Center for Art, University of Minnesota, 405 21st Av. S., Mpls. Ends Oct. 12. 612-624-7530 or www.nash.umn.edu)
