Art at St. Kate's

Saturday: Now in its sixth year, Art at St. Kate's brings 100 artists and their handmade wares to the leafy lawn of St. Catherine University in St. Paul. Organized and run by artists, the event focuses on talent from the Upper Midwest and is strictly juried to sustain its reputation for high quality and focus. The artists make everything, including ceramic tableware; jewelry in gold, silver, stone and beads; watercolor paintings and woodcut prints; stained glass; handwoven rugs; turned-wood furniture and utensils; hand-dyed silk clothing and fabric handbags; wooden birdhouses; glass bowls, vases and ornaments. Chris and Sue Holmquist of Northfield made the charming platter shown here. Why buy mass market imports when original, local wares are at hand? Plus food carts, strolling musicians and the pleasure of the company. (10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sat., St. Catherine University, Cleveland and Randolph Avs., St. Paul. www.artistscircle.org) Mary Abbe
