SELECT IMPRESSIONS

Using traditional etching, intaglio, silk screen or other printmaking techniques, contemporary artists carry on the labor-intensive process of creating handmade fine art prints. Not to be confused with photographic reproductions, such prints are original artworks rather than copies of paintings or art in another format. More than 50 images by 29 local printmakers were chosen for "Select Impressions," opening today at Highpoint, the Twin Cities leading studio for the genre. In styles ranging from realistic to abstract, in color or monochrome, the show samples subjects that are humorous, somber, romantic, nostalgic, conceptual, steeped in history or totally contemporary. Jenny Schmid's linocut "She's So Cute Kitty Gal"(pictured) offers a saucy take on how modern guys and gals get on these days. Chosen by curators from three local museums, some were produced at Highpoint's state-of-the-art facility while others were made at local colleges or the artists' own studios. Whatever their origin, they sample a dynamic field that's enjoying a sparkling renaissance in the Twin Cities. (Opening reception, 6:30-9 p.m. Fri., free. Highpoint Center for Printmaking, 912 W. Lake St., Mpls. Show ends March 13. 612-871-1326 or www.highpointprintmaking.org.)
