'From the Rez, to the Hood, to the Lake'

Since Ancient Traditions gallery closed last year, Twin Cities fans of American Indian art have eagerly awaited the opening of its successor, All My Relations Gallery, sponsored by the Native American Community Development Institute. The gallery debuts Friday with an exhibit of never-shown early paintings by Minnesota artist Frank Big Bear. "From the Rez, to the Hood, to the Lake" promises an informal survey of colorful imagery by the Ojibwe artist whose Pop-style work is a dynamic mash-up of traditional symbols, urban encounters and personal footnotes. With their vivid hues, crisp designs and mosaic patterns, Big Bear's paintings bring a lively modernity to accounts of contemporary Indian life. Free opening reception 5-9 p.m. Fri 1/21. 'Permalesque'

With their latest exhibit, the design groups behind CO Exhibitions put their own art on display. "Permalesque" -- a portmanteau of design group Burlesque of North America and creative agency Permanent -- will highlight both crew's design work, prints and videos, as well as some one-of-a-kind collaborative pieces. Poster fiends will want to snatch up prints made for the likes of Arcade Fire, the Melvins, Franz Ferdinand and Blitzen Trapper, or pick up some delectable beef jerky made in-house by Burlesque. Inspired by the information age, the show aims to overstimulate -- and knowing the proliferation of both groups in recent years, it's sure to make good on that promise. Former Fog frontman Andrew Broder and Marijuana Deathsquads will perform during the opening. Free opening reception 7-10 p.m. Sat 1/22. More event details.
