Opens Thursday 11/3

Walker Art Center celebrates the late choreographer, whose troupe will perform four concerts (8 p.m. Fri.-Sat., 2 & 7 p.m. next Sun., McGuire Theater) in its "Farewell Legacy Tour" before disbanding. And on Thursday the Walker will open the first in a series of exhibits featuring artifacts from the troupe's history. Cunningham's collaborations with composers and visual artists are legendary. Throughout his 70-year career, he famously sent his dancers onstage to perform with music they previously may not have heard amid sets they'd not encountered before. He prized radical independence for his collaborators, and they in turn produced remarkably fresh and innovative pieces, about 150 of which have been acquired by the Walker. "Dance Works 1" will highlight painted curtains, collages and sculptural objects that Robert Rauschenberg concocted during his long association with Cunningham's troupe (he was its resident designer from 1954 to 1964 and an occasional collaborator later). The Rauschenberg piece shown here is from "Minutiae."
