Area college roundup: Unbeaten Sioux Falls scores enough to beat MSU Mankato

Minnesota State Mankato slowed down potent Sioux Falls, but the Cougars pulled out a 24-14 NSIC victory over the Mavericks on Saturday in Mankato.

The Cougars (9-0, 5-0 NSIC South), ranked No. 8 in Division II, came into the game ninth in the nation in scoring (43 points a game) but were held under 35 points for the first time this season.

The Cougars, who trailed 7-0 after one quarter, rallied behind Max Mickey and Luke Papilion. Mickey rushed for 165 yards and Papilion for 104 yards and two TDs and passed for 130 yards and a TD.

The Cougars, who went into the game second in Division II in rushing (341 yards per game), rushed for 346 yards.

Nick Pieruccini passed for 151 yards and a TD and Ricky Lloyd threw a TD passed and rushed for 48 yards for the Mavericks (6-3, 3-2).

Augustana 21, Winona State 20: Trey Heid threw a TD pass with 18 seconds left and scored on a two-point conversion to lift the host Vikings past the Warriors in Sioux Falls, S.D.

After Matt Heller capped a six-play, 75-drive with a 4-yard TD reception, the Vikings (6-3, 3-2 NSIC South) lined up to kick a game-tying PAT. But the Warriors were called for a personal foul for leaping and Augustana decided to go for the victory. Heid passed for 279 yards as he became the all-time leader in total offense in NSIC history (12,262 yards). He also tied the Augustana single-season record with his 32nd TD pass of the season. The Warriors (6-3, 3-2) had scored with 1:25 remaining to take a 20-13 lead.

Bemidji State 48, St. Cloud State 7: Jordan Hein passed for 381 yards and four TDs and rushed for a TD as the visiting Beavers (7-2, 4-1 NSIC North) earned their biggest victory over the Huskies (4-5, 3-2) in series history.

Minn. Duluth 54, Minn.-Crookston 23: The Bulldogs built a 26-0 lead after one quarter and went on to defeat the host Golden Eagles. Drew Bauer threw for 269 yards and three TDS for the Bulldogs (8-1, 5-0 NSIC North).

SW Minnesota State 28, Concordia (St. Paul) 14: Hudson Walton rushed for 145 yards and Max Simmons for 138 yards — and each scored a TD — as the host Mustangs ran past the Golden Bears in Marshall, Minn. The Mustangs (5-4, 2-3 NSIC South), who ended a three-game losing streak, rushed for a season-high 311 yards in a school-record 70 rushing attempts. Ron Johnson passed for 165 yards and a TD for the Golden Bears (2-7, 0-5 NSIC South).

MSU Moorhead 42, Minot State 24: Demetrius Carr passed for 277 yards and five TDs to pace the host Dragons (5-4, 3-2 NSIC North) to the victory.

UMAC

Northwestern 21, Greenville 14: B.J. Foster rushed for two TDs and Corban Halbur passed for 304 yards to help the Eagles maintain a share of the UMAC lead. Kyle Anenson's 7-yard TD run in the third quarter gave the Eagles (8-1, 7-1 UMAC) a 20-14 lead.

St. Scholastica 21, Westminster 20: The Saints scored 21 points in the final 13 minutes to rally for a 21-20 victory in Fulton, Mo. The Saints (6-3, 6-2) trailed 14-0 going into the fourth quarter before scoring twice in the first five minutes of the quarter to tie the score. Westminster (4-5, 4-4) took a 20-14 lead with 5:23 remaining but missed the PAT. Jack Peru's 17-yard TD run and Donovan Blatz's PAT with 3:30 gave the Saints the lead.

UPPER MIDWEST

Macalester 48, Cornell (Iowa) 36: Jacob Jones rushed for three TDs and Cody Petrich passed for 323 yards and two TDs to help the host Scots outlast the Rams. The Scots (7-2, 6-1 Midwest) led 41-16 midway through the third quarter, but the Rams scored 20 points in a row to pull with 41-36 with eight minutes left. Jones scored on a 1-yard run with 1:13 remaining to clinch the victory.
