The best part of my job is getting an inside look at other people's homes. For our Home of the Month series, I profile a house that's either newly-built or has had a major renovation. All the projects are designed by top-notch architects who know how to turn a series of spaces into a home you'll want to stay in forever.

I'm amazed at how expertly-executed, thoughtful good design can transform homes in so many ways. Architects have a kind of X-ray vision and can see through walls, visualize a home's potential and figure out smart ways to use existing space. They know all about the latest construction techniques, products and finishes. Owners tell me their remade homes are a joy to live in and they plan to stay there for a long time.

Instead of moving, many people are opting to remodel and improve what they have. The Star Tribune/AIA "Evening of Architecture and Design" on Wednesday, March 16 is a chance to talk to local architects about your dream project. It includes a panel discussion on "Designed to Stay, " about ways to remake your home to work for the way you live today and for the long-term.

You'll also get to see the winners of the Home of the Month contest. The program is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at International Market Square, Lyndale and Glenwood Avs., N., Minneapolis. Tickets are $16 ( register by noon Wed.); or $20 at the door and includes appetizers. Register at www.aia-mn.org/hotm/register.cfm or call 612-338-6763.
