Apple Valley junior Kieran McKeag is making other throwers on the boys' track circuit take notice. McKeag broke the school record in the discus and shot put within a one-week span.

"It was his goal to break both school records by the time he graduated," Apple Valley coach Jeff Flugum said. "At the end of the year last year, we knew this season would be a good possibility to get the discus record. The shot put was going to be tough to get."

McKeag threw the discus 178 feet, 4 inches in a dual meet with Eagan in the South Suburban Conference. The previous mark of 171 feet, 4 inches was set by Trey Pipkins in 2014.

Four days later, McKeag broke the school mark in the shot put with a toss of 62 feet in a conference triangular meet with Burnsville and Shakopee. He broke the 33-year old record of 61 feet, 1½ inches set by Eric Lowe in 1983.

"He was surprised and excited when in his first meet of the year he broke the discus record, as well as this past Tuesday when he broke the shot put record," Flugum said. "All the kids were excited for him. What was really cool was seeing his family, who are so close, be a part of both days."

Kieran's older brother, Brennan, is an Eagles assistant coach and was an All-America thrower at Hamline. His father, Dave, was also an All-America thrower at St. Thomas.

"Kieran has a passion for throwing and track and field in general," Flugum said. "He caught the throwing bug at a very young age. He is a tremendously hardworking student-athlete."

Eagles flying high

Apple Valley's baseball team hasn't finished above .500 since the 2011 season. It's off to a much better start this year.

The Eagles have won four of their first five games, with all of the victories coming in South Suburban Conference play.

Their only setback came at the hands of Class 3A, No. 8 Minnetonka 6-4.
