A 23-year-old Apple Valley man was convicted Thursday of assaulting and repeatedly stabbing his mother.

After a court trial, Dakota County District Court Judge Jerome Abrams convicted Tyler Christensen of assault in the first- and second- degree for stabbing his mother in the neck in June. Christensen was acquitted of attempted murder in the first degree.

According to the criminal complaint, Apple Valley police found Christensen kneeling in his front yard with blood on his hands, arms and clothing.

Police found his mother unconscious with multiple stab wounds to her neck in the kitchen. She also had cuts to her head.

A cut to the left side of her neck opened a blood vessel and she had internal bleeding, the complaint said.

The mother was first transported to Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville then to another hospital for surgery.

When questioned at the hospital, the mother said she and her son were arguing when one of them grabbed a frying pan. She could not remember anything else, but told police her son did it. She also added that he is mentally ill, the complaint said.

Christensen will be sentenced on May 25.
