Kelly Lanz, a Certified Medical Assistant at HealthPartners Inver Grove Heights Clinic, talks about her job.

Q: What's a typical workday like for you?

A: I work in the family practice clinic, where I am fortunate to be able to see patients from all walks of life. I work with patients from the time they walk in the door through their appointments and any procedures all the way to the time they leave. Before patients arrive, I check the computer to see if they need lab work, x-rays or immunizations. I set up for procedures and when the patient arrives, I collect body mass index information and accurate vital signs. I also update medications and immunizations, retrieve outside records and remind patients of preventive services such as colorectal screenings and mammograms. I assist with procedures and health maintenance needs, such as ensuring a diabetic's lab and preventive services are up to date. I help co-workers with their needs and make sure the clinic runs smoothly. Most of all I need to be a good listener and help meet the needs of our patients.

Q: How does your role fit into the bigger healthcare picture?

A: I play a vital role in our clinic by providing quality healthcare to our patients alongside doctors and other healthcare workers.

Q: Who do you interact with during the course of the day?

A: I work most with patients and their families as well as colleagues, doctors, lab technicians, office staff, school officials and clinics outside HealthPartners.

Q: Why did you become a certified medical assistant?

A: I'm very dedicated to the care and well-being of others. I wanted to be able to do that in a clinic environment. CMAs are so versatile; I'm able to play a role not only in the clinic, but also in the laboratory and in radiology. I can help to make a patient's experience great and help them to have a better day.

Q: What do you like about your work?

A: I receive so much enjoyment and overwhelming satisfaction from helping others. My co-workers are great. We work as a team and they've been great mentors to me. I love what I do and don't think of it as work. I can't believe I get paid to do this.
