Q: What's a typical workday like for you?

A: I am in charge of scanning patient information such as test results and consultation reports into the computer and attaching it to their electronic medical record, which is accessible to providers throughout the Fairview system. I also help patients access their records online, process patient release of information requests and remind patients of routine tests they may have overlooked, such as mammograms and colonoscopies. I help providers and nurses find test results and consultation records, and answer patient phone calls about their records.

Q: How does your role fit into the bigger healthcare picture?

A: I am the person who gets all of the outside information into the electronic medical record. This helps our providers offer better overall healthcare to their patients and helps patients to keep better track of their healthcare, too.

Q: Who do you interact with during the course of the day?

A: I interact with doctors, nurses, healthcare administrators, clinic managers and patients.

Q: Why did you become a health information management quality coordinator?

A: I had a degree in medical administration and was working in another field when this job became available. It was a chance for me to start using my schooling and I realized I did like working in this field. Electronic medical records were just coming online and it was fun to be part of the process.

Q: What do you like about your work?

A: It's extremely flexible. Plus my job is very important to everybody - doctors, nurses, patients - every single person is depending on me because I have healthcare information that is important to them. I like having such an active role in healthcare.
