Q: What's a typical workday like for you?

I am one of seven pharmacy techs who work in the outpatient pharmacy, where we process discharge medications, employee prescriptions and Regions Hospital clinic prescriptions. The pharmacy is very busy and I handle multiple issues at the same time. I greet and interact with customers, answer telephones, work cash registers, help fill prescriptions, process orders and interact with insurance companies. As the lead pharmacy tech, I do data entry and fill in wherever we're short.

Q: How does your role fit into the bigger healthcare picture?

My role is to work with the pharmacy team to dispense the correct medication with the correct dosage and directions to the correct patient so they can get well. Patient safety is very important and the pharmacy has many safety checks in place. The pharmacist always double-checks medications when techs are filling them.

Q: Who do you interact with during the course of the day?

I interact with patients who come to the pharmacy window, and with those who call in telephone orders. I also interact with doctors, nurses, insurance companies, pharmacists and other technicians.

Q: Why did you become a pharmacy technician?

I wanted to play an important role in the healthcare field. Without proper medications, many patients would not get better.

Q: What do you like about your work?

I like learning about the different medications and the important role I have in the pharmacy. I meet interesting people at the pharmacy window and I like knowing that I am accomplishing something that will help them get well. Regions Hospital is a great place to work and the people I work with are great
