________________________ The Red Wing City Council takes up the issue of frac sand mining today, following a recommendation last week from its planning commission to severely restrict the industry. After a public hearing Tuesday, the planning commission unanimously recommended the council adopt the strict ordinance. The city has a one-year moratorium that expires Oct. 28. The Post-Bulletin has the story. ________________________ Authorities – and a family -- are still trying to figure out the seemingly random circumstances surrounding the death of a 20 year old man after he was punched in a St. Cloud alley Thursday night. Colton Gleason of Greenfiled was walking with two female friends when a car passed them in the alley, nearly hitting them. The car then stopped with several people getting out and one person punched Gleason, who fell back and hit his head on the pavement. He died Friday evening of head trauma. There's a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the assailant. ________________________ Ballots in Duluth were mailed Friday with the name of a candidate for the Minnesota House who is no longer running. Rep. Kerry Gauthier withdrew from the race after he was stopped by police for a sexual encounter at a rest stop with a 17 year old boy. DFL-ers are trying to get the state Supreme Court to replace Gauthier's name on the ballot; until then though, they're working on a write-in campaign for Erik Simonson, who got the DFL endorsement. Here's the story. http://capitolchat.areavoices.com/2012/09/21/duluth-ballots-mailed-with-name-of-withdrawn-candidate/ ________________________ News tip?
