The countless events that enabled Brett Favre to play for the Minnesota Vikings in 2009 all started a year ago today.

It was on this date that Favre informed the New York Jets he was done playing professional football. Unlike his retirement from the Green Bay Packers 11 months before, this announcement featured no tears and no great ceremony. All it featured was a conference call.

"It has been a wonderful career," Favre said. "It's time to leave."

Many were convinced that Favre meant what he said, as this story from the New York Times reflects.

At the time, Favre had not been released by the Jets and that would not happen until the spring so it did appear as if his career was finished.

So far, the Vikings have not heard anything from Favre about his plans for 2010. But if anything the New York Times piece on his "retirement" just reminds us that even if Favre does make a decision in the coming weeks, that doesn't mean it will be his final decision.
