Scott and Laurel Anderson began building their lake home in Webb Lake Township, Wis., in 2005. Scott, a self-employed remodeler, did much of the work himself with help from contractor friends. "It's always been my dream to build a home," said Scott. The couple are very happy with the result, spending weekends there year-round.

Anderson said he had such a good experience in building his investment property that he's considering selling it and starting all over again. "It would be hard for Laurel to let it go, but she understands my passion for the creative process."

The home is part of the Voyager Village property owners association, with homes on seven lakes on 6,000 acres. Amenities include a golf course, clubhouse, restaurant, private beaches, boat slips, snowmobile trails, a cross-country ski course and a pool.
