Authorities have closed University Avenue between 81st Avenue and Osborne Road in Fridley until further notice.
A transformer blew earlier this morning and a police spokeswoman said there is a threat that the top of the pole could break off. That could bring down as many as eight lines. Police closed the road as a precaution, she said.
Crews from Xcel Energy are on the way. Drivers are being diverted to nearby side streets and to Central Avenue.
