Sixty-two winter sports athletes at the University of Minnesota earned spots on the academic All-Big Ten teams released Wednesday. Two of them, junior gymnast Nathan Fortunato and sophomore swimmer Jessica Plant, were among the nine conference athletes with 4.0 grade-point averages.

To be eligible for the honor, athletes had to be in at least their second year at Minnesota and have at least a 3.0 GPA.

The breakdown of award winners by sport: women's swimming and diving, 20; men's swimming and diving, 12; men's gymnastics, 9; wrestling, 8; women's gymnastics, 6; women's basketball, 5; men's basketball, 2.

Etc.

• Gophers sophomore Taylor Uhl was named the offensive MVP of the women's soccer team for the second year in a row at a recent awards banquet while senior Marissa Price repeated as defensive MVP. Freshman Allie Reinke was picked the most improved player.

• Junior Juan Pablo Ramirez of the Gophers has been named the Big Ten men's tennis athlete of the week. The native of Bogota, Colombia, won two singles and two doubles matches this past weekend.

• The Gophers baseball team beat South Dakota State 5-1 as left fielder Andy Henkemeyer went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
