American women put men to shame in a new survey comparing the amount of time they spend doing unpaid work (including cooking and household chores). According to data from the international Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, American women spend 4 hours, 18 minutes daily on unpaid work while men only spend 2 hours, 34 minutes on these pursuits.

Cooking and household chores take up most of this time, but the survey also defines unpaid work as shopping, caring for relatives and volunteering. The gender disparity of 104 minutes in the U.S. was relatively small. Women in Korea, Spain, Japan, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Mexico and India spend three more hours per day in unpaid work than men!

In a two-income household, I frankly wonder whether either of those U.S. figures are correct. Seriously, how can men or women cram that much work around the house into the average weekday if they're commuting and working between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.? Just because the washer cycle takes 50 minutes, doesn't mean you are doing 50 minutes of laundry! But I digress. What do you think? How much time do you spend in the average day on chores or other forms of unpaid work? And which chores are the ones you hate the most?

The gender disparity was only of several fascinating facts to come from the OECD's analysis of paid and unpaid work in 29 developed nations.

Americans spend the least amount of time per day (30 minutes) cooking. By comparison, Turks spend 74 minutes daily cooking. Americans also inhale their food, spending only 80 minutes actually eating. That is third lowest among the participating nations. Chew your food people!

In leiu of cooking, the data shows that Americans spend more unpaid time volunteering, shopping and caring for relatives. Below is the comparison of participating nations in their total minutes of daily paid work/study or unpaid work. We are, relatively speaking, a busy nation!
