FARGO, N.D. - A freight train heading from Minneapolis to Minot, N.D., derailed Sunday about 45 miles northwest of Fargo. There were no reports of injuries.
A Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman said one empty tanker car was burning Sunday evening, but a hazardous materials crew was on the scene and there was no environmental or public danger.
The train left the tracks on the main line between Fargo and Minot. In all, 37 cars were derailed, along with two locomotives. The cars were carrying general freight, including sand and 50-foot-long pipes, which spilled.
One resident about 100 yards from the derailment was asked to temporarily relocate.
The cause of the derailment was being investigated. Speed was not a factor, said BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas.
The track carries about 40 trains daily. Traffic was rerouted.
