A 2-year-old boy died Thursday when he was struck by a car in Corcoran.

The boy was in the street near an intersection in Maple Hills Estates, a mobile home park, when he was hit about 6 p.m., said Lisa Kiava, spokeswoman for the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. The accident occurred in the 7800 block of Maple Hill Road. The family took the boy to Maple Grove Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"It looks to be a very tragic accident," Corcoran police Lt. John Hamilton said.

About 200 mobile homes are in the park, where a lot of the boy's extended family lives, including cousins, aunts and uncles, he said.

"And there are plenty of young kids," he said. "And this time of year, the weather is nice and kids are out on bikes, running and walking around.

"It's a tragic day when we lose a 2-year-old in our community," Hamilton said.

Additional details about the accident weren't available Thursday night because investigators were working to gather more information.

When such accidents happen, Hamilton said, people should call 911 for medical help. In this case, it might not have changed the outcome, he said.

Corcoran is about 15 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
