Two Twin Cities women traveling on a northern Iowa interstate were killed after their car collided with a semitrailer truck on the wrong side of the median over the weekend, authorities said.

The crash occurred Saturday morning on Interstate 35 near Swaledale, roughly 40 miles south of the Minnesota border, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Driver Tara L. Nevins, 30, of Fridley, and Tiffany Jeanette-Rose Swenson, 19, of Ramsey, were killed in the collision, the patrol said. Nevins was not wearing a seat belt, while Swenson was belted in, the patrol said.

According to the patrol:

Nevins was heading south on I-35 when the car crossed the median and entered the northbound lanes of the interstate.

The car then hit the northbound truck. The car ended up on the northbound left shoulder, and the big rig came to rest on its side in the median.

Both women were dead at the scene. The truck driver, Michael Browning, 43, of Jackson, Tenn., was unhurt.
