Two administrators at a Catholic school have been fired after one of their high school teachers was charged with having a sexual relationship with one of her students, a diocese official said Thursday.

Pacelli Catholic Schools President Jim Hamburge and Principal Mary Holtorf were first put on paid leave last week, with the Winona Diocese saying that move had nothing to do with the teacher-student sex case involving recently fired math instructor Mary Gilles.

Diocese spokesman Joel Hennessy said the church body is no longer distancing the actions against Hamburge and Holtorf from the case against Gilles, saying, "We've retracted that because [Pacelli's board of trustees] is looking into it."

Hamburge and Holtorf were not available for comment about their dismissal.

Gilles, 28, was charged with carrying out a monthslong sexual relationship with one of her 17-year-old students. The two discussed in recent weeks that she may be carrying their child, according to the charges.

Mary F. Gilles, who lives just northeast of Austin, was charged with six counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, a charge based on the boy's age and the defendant being more than four years older.

Gilles, who was arrested at her home and has since posted bail, has a court date scheduled for Monday. A call to her home Thursday was answered by a friend who said she was not speaking to the news media. Her attorney was not available for comment.
