CLEVELAND – Barring a setback, it appears Kyle Schwarber's improbable return from left knee surgery will be complete when he is added Tuesday to the Chicago Cubs' World Series roster.
Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk for Mesa, Ariz., in his second Arizona Fall League game Monday and was expected to join the Cubs in Cleveland. A scout who watched Schwarber said he took very good swings and slid into second on his double without issue.
"He's been doing everything," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "He's swinging the bat well. He's running very well. He's done some sliding drills, all that kind of stuff just to test the whole thing out."
Last fall, Schwarber hit .333 with a franchise-record five homers in nine playoff games. One of his homers landed on the top of a Wrigley Field videoboard.
Schwarber, 23, tore two ligaments April 7 and wasn't expected to be ready until spring training. He received medical clearance last week during his six-month checkup.
First baseman Anthony Rizzo said he has been amazed at Schwarber's focus during his rehab. Schwarber has spent countless long days at the ballpark undergoing therapy, then sticking around to watch the game that night, unusual for injured players. Rizzo joked he told Schwarber to stop watching video of his swing and "just watch baseball and enjoy it."
The World Series rosters are due at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Kipnis uncertain
A sprained left ankle could keep Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis out of Game 1.
