Volunteers for Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity aren't afraid of a project. So it makes sense that their annual gala would include a challenging dress code -- construction-inspired evening attire.

Caution tape and tool belts were part of the uniform at the 11th annual Hard Hat and Black Tie gala, held May 1 at the downtown Minneapolis Marriott. But conversation turned from best uses for levels to an exciting announcement: Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter will be coming to the Twin Cities this October for their annual Habitat work trip. Last year, the former prez and his wife went to Thailand, China, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

"We've been selected by the Carters because we're focusing on neighborhood revitalization," said Susan Haigh, president of the local chapter. In addition to assisting with first-time home ownership, the local Habitat chapter runs a repair and maintenance program, A Brush with Kindness, which offers free counseling to help prevent mortgage foreclosures.

Like the Carters, who will be working on a home during their visit, many of the party attendees are hands-on volunteers.

"Yesterday we were putting up walls," said John Winters, who has been working with the organization for 15 years. His wife, Barb Winters, who also attended the gala, is a Habitat volunteer, as well. "You should see her with a hammer," he said.
