Construction work on Kowalski's new supermarket in Excelsior is starting this week.

Oppidian Investment Group said Wednesday that it will begin work on the highly-anticipated new Kowalski's, as well as an office development in Excelsior.

Woodbury-based Kowalski's is one of the Twin Cities more upscale grocers, competing with the likes of Lunds and Byerly's. Kowalski's has nine local supermarkets, including in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Eagan, White Bear Lake and Oak Park Heights.

The grocery chain could not be immediately reached for comment.

The Excelsior Kowalski's will be about 15,000 square feet and will include a wine shop and a Starbuck's, Oppidian said in a press statement. The store will be housed in the old Mason Motors building, which will be renovated.

Minneapolis-based Oppidian also said it's developing a 20,000 square-foot retail and office building that will face the new Kowalski's.
