Finding activities for young children is a continuing challenge, especially for hipsters and other parents looking to get out of the house at night.

Facing the same issue as parents of a 3-year-old daughter, Carrie Agnew and her partner offer a solution designed to appeal both to kids and parents: the Tantrum Dance Party series.

The event is aimed at kids from 1 to 6 but all ages are welcome, Agnew said.

On tap for youngsters: A kid-friendly DJ, balloons, face painting and the digital video playground of Minneapolis-based Playatta. For grown-ups: Beer, available for purchase along with soft drinks and food. For all: music, a dance floor and three hours of out-of-the-house family time.

Agnew hopes Sunday's event will top the 300 who attended the series' debut in March at the Varsity Theater. She tended bar there and at Nomad World Pub while studying radiology but recently left both jobs to begin clinical training in South Dakota. She'll design flyers and do social media for the series while her partner will oversee the dances during her absence.

"Just come and party with your kids," Agnew said. "How often do you get to do that? You don't even have to clean up afterwards."

The series continues from 4-7 p.m. Sunday (5/15) at the Cabooze. Tickets are $5 in advance, $6 at the door; children under 2 get in free. (Information: www.facebook.com/tantrumseries. Tickets: Search for "tantrum" at www.ticketfly.com.)

Three and out with Carrie Agnew

  • Who came to the first dance?

There was quite a wide range but I would say it was mostly mid-30s. It was kind of a hipster crowd of parents. There are a lot of us out there who don't believe our lives are over now that we have kids. And we don't want to stay at home at night.

    • Any tantrums at the Tantrum Dance Party?

A couple, mostly when they were leaving. It was quite fitting watching parents drag their kids out when it was over. They didn't want to leave. That means they were having a good time.

      • What's on the Tantrum Dance Party playlist — only kiddie songs?

Not really. We try to get a good mix between popular tunes and stuff the parents would listen to that doesn't have the naughty words. The Current is sponsoring us. We try to do what they do with Rock the Cradle but do it on a monthly basis.

        • What's on the horizon?

We're going to try to do a couple of smaller events this summer at smaller venues, quick live music concerts. We have a lot of great kids bands in the area. Eventually we'd like to be doing it at least once a month, a dance party or alternative with live music.

          • Any Barney or Wiggles making the playlist mix?

Absolutely not. I would go insane. Nobody wants that. My kid would get bored. We want to give them a taste of good music.

            • Were you a dancing kid?

As far as I remember, I was just running around the farm I grew up on, mostly breaking something or riding a tricycle off a hay bale or something.
