Woman found fatally shot in dark south Minneapolis alley
Police officers found the body in the 2200 block of Elliot Avenue S. after responding to calls about 1:20 a.m.
Late Saturday morning, some residents in the Phillips neighborhood said they'd heard gunshots around midnight, prompting several 911 calls, while others were awakened by officers' knocks on their doors.
Beside the sunlit alley, a man named Scott, who asked that his last name not be used, said residents have asked city officials to replace the streetlight's bulb, which burned out at least six months ago.
"It's a little unnerving, given the situations that we're put in," Scott said. "I'm … 20 feet from a murder."
Two female residents of a nearby house said they got home early Saturday to sirens and police lights illuminating the alley. As noon approached, they stood near two men who were replacing the wheels on an old white sedan, tuning it up for summer.
"Gun violence," one woman said, shrugging. "It's stuff that goes on all the time."
Police are asking anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or to send an anonymous tip to CRIMES (274637); begin the message with TIP674.
The Hennepin County medical examiner will release the woman's identity after an autopsy.
