Winona man who fell to his death over weekend is identified

WINONA, MINN. -- Winona police identified a man found dead in a downtown alley over the weekend as Matthew Jon Christensen, 22, of Winona.

Deputy Police Chief Paul Bostrack said the body was discovered just before 10 a.m. Sunday in the alley at the bottom of an exterior stairway.

Bostrack said investigators think Christensen either fell down the stairs or off a nearby deck where he had been at small get-together.

Alcohol had been consumed.

Bostrack was last seen alive between 2 and 3 a.m. Sunday.

An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

It was the second recent death of a man in his 20s in downtown Winona caused by an apparent fall from a two-story building.

Kellen Donald Coatney, 20, of Eagan, a Winona State University student, died of head injuries March 7 after falling from the roof of a downtown building, where he had apparently gone to smoke a cigarette, police said.

There was frost on the roof, and Coatney, who had been drinking inside with others, apparently lost his footing.

He was taken to a Winona hospital, then transferred to a hospital in La Crosse, Wis., where he died.
