Wine deal: Colby Red

WINE

Zinfandel, with its zesty fruit and briary undertones, has long been my barbecue wine, but there's a new kid in town, and it's named after a kid. The Colby Red ($12) has the same kind of big ol' ripe fruit as the better zins, with just enough grip and structure to produce a mouthfeel with oomph. This blend of cab, zin, syrah, merlot and petite sirah was concocted by stellar vintner Daryl Groom for his son Colby, who was diagnosed with a rare heart disease at age 10. Now 14, Colby's "doing great," says Daryl. Some proceeds from this wine (more than $250,000 to date) go to heart-related causes. Widely available.
