Saying goodbye to longtime manager

Edina will hold a public reception in honor of outgoing City Manager Gordon Hughes from 5 to 8 p.m. on July 26 at Centennial Lakes Park, 7499 France Av. S.

Hughes, who joined the city in 1974 as an environmental planner, is retiring on July 30.

The fishing-themed reception, which will include light refreshments, is open to the public. Cost is $10 per person. Reservations must be made before July 16 by calling 952-927-8861 or sending an e-mail to edinamail@ci. edina.mn.us.


Sale set during Raspberry Festival

A Community Sale will be held from noon to 9 p.m. July 17 at the Hopkins Pavilion, 11000 Excelsior Blvd., during Hopkins' annual Raspberry Festival.

Donations for the sale, scheduled the day of the Raspberry Festival fireworks, will be accepted through July 15 at the Hopkins Pavilion.

Community sale spots also are available for individuals or groups who want to sell items during the event.

Drive-in celebrates 50 years in business

The Minnetonka Drive-In this weekend will celebrate 50 years of serving up ice cream and hot dogs to kids -- many of whom have now become parents and grandparents and are still coming back for more.

On Friday, it will sponsor a chili dog-eating contest and a talent competition. On Saturday, it will host a car show from noon to 10 p.m. featuring classic cars and hot rods. It also will hold an employee reunion at 3 p.m., and Hula-Hoop, limbo and other contests from 2-4 p.m.

Then Saturday night there will be free music from 7-10 p.m., with the Fugitives and Echoes of Elvis featuring Eddie Hughes. Everyone is encouraged to wear '50s and '60s attire.

Master gardener tours in Carver and Scott

The 2010 Carver/Scott Master Gardener Tour, featuring seven gardens of local master gardeners, is scheduled for 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 24.

Tickets are $10 through July 11 or $12 on the day of the tour, and are available at the Carver County Extension office at 952-466-5300 or the Scott County Extension office at 952-492-5410.

Ticket holders will drive themselves to the seven gardens designed by master gardeners. They include vegetable, rain, cottage, sun, shade, formal, natural and patio gardens.

Swimming lessons start next week

Plymouth Parks and Recreation is offering swimming lessons through the Red Cross Learn to Swim program starting Monday and continuing through Aug. 6.

The lessons will be conducted at two sites: the Wayzata East Middle School Pool at 12000 Ridgemount Av. in Plymouth and the Wayzata West Middle School Pool at 149 Barry Av. in Wayzata.

Lessons may be scheduled over a two-week period, Monday-Friday. Or they are available in twice-a-week classes over a four-week period, on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Options for lessons also include parent and child, preschool, youth and adult lessons. Private swimming lessons also are available.

Staffers are Red Cross certified and lifeguards are on duty at all times.
