BLOOMINGTON

Two charter schools oust top leader

The leader of two Bloomington charter schools has been fired from both.

Margaret Glasch led Seven Hills Classical Academy, a K-5 school, and Beacon Preparatory School, a grades 6-8 school located in the same facility.

Citing misconduct and failure to meet performance expectations, the Seven Hills school board fired Glasch last month. It said that allegations were made against her that included "inappropriate and unprofessional behavior." On Jan. 10, the Beacon Prep board voted 6-1 to also end her contract, effective Jan. 25.

"This makes me sick," Liz Ekholm, the president of the schools' parent/teacher group, said after the meeting. "It's sad. It's wrong. I'm shocked." Ekholm said she's baffled by the boards' moves and believes it was due to some teachers' dislike for Glasch.

"She built one of the strongest charter schools in the state," Ekholm said. "And all of a sudden, she's been fired from two schools. Where did this come from and why?"

No allegations were made at Beacon Prep and no investigation was conducted. Staff are at-will employees, lawyer Ann Goering told the board, so the board may terminate any employee without cause.

Kelly Gilliland was the only board member to oppose terminating Glasch's contract. "I strongly feel a miscarriage of justice happened tonight," she said tearfully after the meeting. Board Chair Meghan Butler declined to elaborate on the firing but said, "We have to do what is best for the school."
