West Metro notebook: Edina girls' tennis aims at No. 20

October 15, 2016 at 9:08PM

After a regular season marred by the absence of No. 1 singles player Sophie Reddy for the first two weeks and a flu bug that took a toll midway through the season, Edina looks poised to defend its Class 2A tennis championship and make it 20 in a row.

The Hornets routed the rest of the field in the Class 2A, Section 6 team tournament, winning all four team matches by 7-0 scores. They defeated No. 3-seeded Hopkins in the finals Tuesday without dropping a set, losing just 16 total games.

Nice debut

Minneapolis Southwest soccer forward Nico Kaye made his varsity debut a memorable one last week. Kaye, a junior who was just called up from the JV team, scored two goals in a 3-0 victory over Minneapolis Roosevelt. He followed it up by scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal in a 3-1 victory over Henry Sibley.

Delano tennis returns

After a season-opening loss to Hopkins, the Delano girls' tennis team has been unbeatable. The Tigers have won 19 consecutive matches, punctuated by a 4-3 victory over Wayzata in the Class 2A, Section 5 championship match Monday. The victory sends the Tigers to the Class 2A state tournament for the second consecutive year. They had never qualified for the tournament before last year.

Recruiting scene

Eden Prairie offensive lineman J.J. Drew committed to play at Harvard. The 6-6, 310-pound Drew is the second Minnesota offensive lineman from the Class of 2017 to choose Harvard, joining Benilde-St. Margaret's Eric Wilson.

New wrestling coach

Eden Prairie hired veteran coach Jim Nunn to lead its wrestling program this winter.

Nunn replaces Scot Davis, who left after three seasons to take over the program at Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City, Iowa.

Nunn previously coached at Prior Lake, Brooklyn Center, Blake/Breck, DeLaSalle and most recently Minnetonka, before retiring in 2012.
