Weekend traffic: Twin Cities Marathon will test drivers, too

As thousands of runners make their way from downtown Minneapolis to downtown St. Paul during Sunday's Twin Cities Marathon, drivers could have an endurance test of their own as they try to get around.

Marathon officials suggest using Interstate Hwy. 94 and I-35W in Minneapolis to bypass the racecourse. In St. Paul, motorists are advised to use I-35E or Ayd Mill Road or Grand Avenue to get around the finish line near the State Capitol.

Traffic will be able to cross the course at a few intersections — such as Lake Street near Lake Calhoun — at the discretion of course marshals.

Other traffic-generating events include the Twins' final regular season home games Friday through Sunday and a Lynx playoff game Sunday at Target Center.

Here are some places where motorists will find road work:

• Southbound Hwy 100 between Hwy. 62 and I-494. The road and ramps will close Friday at 10 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m. Monday. These ramps also will be closed: Southbound Hwy. 100 to eastbound Hwy. 62, westbound Hwy. 62 to southbound Hwy. 100 and both 70th and 77th streets to southbound Hwy. 100.

• The ramp from southbound Hwy. 100 to Hwy. 55 in Golden Valley is closed until mid-October.

• Hwy. 13 is closed between 2nd Street and Lexington Avenue in Mendota and Lilydale. The detour is via Hwy. 110 and I-35E.

• The ramp from southbound I-35E to eastbound I-94 and southbound Hwy. 52 is closed.

• Northbound I-35W between Hwy. 36 and I-694 and southbound lanes between I-694 and County Road E2 will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday.

• Southbound lanes of Snelling Avenue will be closed at I-94 from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Sunday.

• Hwy. 10 near Armstrong Boulevard in Ramsey. Armstrong is closed north of Hwy. 10 through October.

• County Road 101 over the Minnesota River is closed from 6 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday.

A 10-mile run begins at 7 a.m. Sunday, and the marathon follows at 8, but road closures are underway.

John Ireland Boulevard between 12th Street and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard closed Thursday.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Aurora Avenue will close at 6 p.m. Friday.

John Ireland Boulevard and Kellogg Boulevard will be closed on from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

12th Street from Wabasha to John Ireland Boulevard will be closed from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday and 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Summit between Ramsey Street and Portland Avenue will be closed from noon Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Downtown streets between 5th and 11th avenues and 6th to 3rd streets will be closed from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. Other road closings along the route include:

Miles 0-1 — 7 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

Miles 3-8 — 7:30 a.m. until 10:20 a.m.

Miles 12-15 — 7:30 to noon

Miles 15-21 — 7 a.m. to noon.

Miles 21-26 — 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
