Stafford, Hellebuyck lift Jets
WINNIPEG, MANITOBA – Drew Stafford scored twice and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 32 shots to lead the Winnipeg Jets to a 6-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night.
Mark Scheifele had a goal and two assists, and Andrew Ladd, Bryan Little and Anthony Peluso also scored for the Jets. Mathieu Perrault also had two assists.
Hellebuyck, playing in his second NHL game, had a strong follow-up to a 3-1 victory against Minnesota on Friday in his debut.
Michael Grabner scored his first goal of the season for Toronto, and rookie Garret Sparks — also playing his second pro game — finished with 29 saves. He led Toronto to a 3-0 win over Edmonton in his NHL debut Monday.
•OKPOSO WINS SHOOTOUT FOR ISLES: Kyle Okposo scored the only goal of the shootout and Jaroslav Halak made 33 saves through overtime as the Islanders defeated the Rangers 2-1 in Brooklyn. John Tavares scored at 12:22 of the second period to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead, but Viktor Stalberg tied it for the Rangers at 18:37 of the second. In overtime, the Islanders killed off a penalty for too many men on the ice, setting up the shootout, where Halak denied Rick Nash, Mats Zuccarello and Dan Boyle. Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist made 36 saves.
•NOTES: The NHL suspended Flyers defenseman Radko Gudas for three games without pay for an illegal check to Senators forward Mika Zibanejad's head. The suspension will cost Gudas $15,995.
… The Predators placed center Mike Fisher on injured reserve because of a lower-body injury that will keep him out of Nashville's next four games. He was injured Tuesday against Arizona.
… Canucks center Brandon Sutter underwent surgery for a sports hernia, and the team expects him to be out an additional four to six weeks.
