Myles Johnson's layup with 40 seconds left gave Rutgers a four-point lead and Eugene Omoruyi made two free throws with nine seconds as the visiting Scarlet Knights edged Northwestern 59-56 on Wednesday night in Big Ten basketball.

In between, Vic Law made a three-pointer for the Wildcats, but he missed another just before the buzzer.

Geo Baker and Montez Mathis led Rutgers (12-12, 5-9 Big Ten), which ended a three-game losing streak, with 12 points apiece; Omoruyi had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Law, who was 2-for-7 from behind the arc, had 17 points for Northwestern (12-12, 3-10), which has lost five in a row.

National men

No. 1 Tennessee 85, South Carolina 73: Admiral Schofield had 21 points and 10 rebounds as the host Volunteers (23-1, 11-0 SEC) defeated the Gamecocks (12-12, 7-4) for their school-record 19th consecutive victory.

"It hurts my soul that we're not a tougher team," South Carolina coach Frank Martin said.

Tennessee owns the longest active winning streak in Division I and is 11-0 in Southeastern Conference competition for the first time in school history.

This also was its 23rd straight home win. South Carolina made 14 three-point baskets but couldn't slow down Tennessee.

Connor Bair had 15 points and Anderson Nelson 14 for St. Thomas (21-3, 17-2), which already has clinched at least a share of the conference title.
